Professional training programmes

Training at Barnet

IAC offers a range of training programmes for professionals at the Barnet Training Centre throughout the year. A Training programmes Leaflet about the service is available to download.

Regular courses offered include:

An introduction to legislation, procedures and practice issues in intercountry adoption

This course is designed for social workers or panel members new to intercountry adoption work and covers legislation, procedure, assessment of intercountry adopters and research outcomes.

What delegates say about the Legislation course:

  • “I think it was a quality day’s training, particularly due to the experience of the trainers.”
  • "Excellent presentation. It made some difficult information more accessible and was very thorough.”
  • “This course really made me think and question my work practices. I think I will go away better prepared to be involved with ICAs.”

Health, Development and Social needs of children adopted from overseas

This course is of benefit to any professional working within the field of intercountry adoption including Medical Advisors, Social Workers, Panel members, Health Visitors, GP's and other health professionals. The day covers the health needs of children coming into the UK from overseas, speech and language needs and research outcomes.

Adoption Support needs in Intercountry Adoption

Bespoke Training Courses

IAC also offers bespoke training courses for adoption social workers, their managers and for adoption panel members, panel advisors and administrators. The courses can be held at Barnet or at a venue provided by the commissioning agency. The Bespoke Leaflet provides more details.

Each course is tailored to the needs of the commissioning agency but often will include topics from the following menu:

  • A general introduction to intercountry adoption legislation, the Hague Convention and the different types of adoption
  • Process and procedure and the duties of the adoption agency
  • The UK as a State of Origin
  • The pros and cons of intercountry adoption
  • The countries overseas and their perspective and criteria
  • Assessing intercountry adopters and evidencing adopter potential at Panel
  • Research outcomes and signposting

Most courses run over one day.

Contributing to training programmes

IAC is often asked to contribute to training events and conferences organised by other bodies in recognition of the unique knowledge and skills of the agency. In the past these have included training organised by BAAF, NAGALRO, Parent Support groups and Government departments.

We would be delighted to talk with you if you are organising an event which would benefit from an intercountry perspective.
